Modelling of the ring current in Saturn’s magnetosphere

چکیده

The existence of a ring current inside Saturn’s magnetosphere was first suggested by Smith et al. (1980) and Ness et al. (1981, 1982), in order to explain various features in the magnetic field observations from the Pioneer 11 and Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. Connerney et al. (1983) formalized the equatorial current model, based on previous modelling work of Jupiter’s current sheet and estimated its parameters from the two Voyager data sets. Here, we investigate the model further, by reconsidering the data from the two Voyager spacecraft, as well as including the Pioneer 11 flyby data set. First, we obtain, in closed form, an analytic expression for the magnetic field produced by the ring current. We then fit the model to the external field, that is the difference between the observed field and the internal magnetic field, considering all the available data. In general, through our global fit we obtain more accurate parameters, compared to previous models. We point out differences between the model’s parameters for the three flybys, and also investigate possible deviations from the axial and planar symmetries assumed in the model. We conclude that an accurate modelling of the Saturnian disk current will require taking into account both of the temporal variations related to the condition of the magnetosphere, as well as non-axisymmetric contributions due to local time effects.

Cassini observations of the variation of Saturn’s ring current parameters with system size

[1] We have examined residual magnetic field vectors observed in Saturn’s magnetosphere during the first 2 years of the Cassini mission and have fit them to a simple axisymmetric model of the ring current in the middle magnetosphere. We then examine the variations of the ring current parameters with size of the magnetosphere. In addition, we obtain secondary parameters, including the value of t...

Sputtering of ice grains and icy satellites in Saturn’s inner magnetosphere

Icy grains and satellites orbiting in Saturn’s magnetosphere are immersed in a plasma that sputters their surfaces. This limits the lifetime of the E-ring grains and ejects neutrals that orbit Saturn until they are ionized and populate its magnetosphere. Here we reevaluate the sputtering rate of ice in Saturn’s inner magnetosphere using the recent Cassini data on the plasma ion density, tempera...

A note on the ring current in Saturn’s magnetosphere: Comparison of magnetic data obtained during the Pioneer-11 and Voyager-1 and -2 fly-bys

We examine the residual (measured minus internal) magnetic field vectors observed in Saturn’s magnetosphere during the Pioneer-11 fly-by in 1979, and compare them with those observed during the Voyager-1 and -2 flybys in 1980 and 1981. We show for the first time that a ring current system was present within the magnetosphere during the Pioneer-11 encounter, which was qualitatively similar to th...

Cassini observations of planetary-period magnetic field oscillations in Saturn’s magnetosphere: Doppler shifts and phase motion

[1] Cassini magnetic field observations show that few-nT oscillations near the planetary rotation period, first observed in Pioneer-11 and Voyager-1 and -2 fly-by data, are essentially ubiquitous in Saturn’s magnetosphere, though their character differs between the quasi-dipolar ring current region and the dawn tail. Examination of data from the ringcurrent region shows, however, that the obser...

Saturn’s Magnetospheric Configuration

This Chapter summarizes our current understanding of Saturn’s magnetospheric configuration. Observations from the Cassini Prime and Equinox Missions have answered some questions and opened new ones. One of the fundamental questions of magnetospheric physics is what are the sources of the plasma that populate the magnetosphere. At Saturn, there is a rich set of possible plasma sources: the solar...
